That frozen layer acts like a barrier — water from melting snow and early spring rain has nowhere to go except sideways and downward along your foundation.
At the same time, the water table rises dramatically as snowpack melts across the region. In a wet spring, the soil around your foundation can become completely saturated, putting hydrostatic pressure against your basement walls and floor. Water finds every crack, gap, and imperfection in your foundation and pushes through.
Several factors make the problem worse:
- Heavy snowpack — a winter with above-average snowfall means more water to absorb all at once
- Rapid temperature swings — a sudden warm spell melts snow faster than the ground can absorb it

2. Remove Standing Water Immediately

Standard homeowners insurance typically does not cover flooding from outside sources — that requires separate flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). However, water damage from a sudden and accidental internal source (such as a failed sump pump) may be covered under your standard policy, depending on your coverage.
The Hidden Damage You Cannot See
The visible water is only part of the problem. Spring thaw flooding causes damage that is easy to miss:
Saturated insulation loses its R-value and becomes a reservoir for moisture and mold. Fiberglass batt insulation in basement rim joists and walls can hold water for weeks, feeding mold growth long after the visible flooding is gone.

Check and Maintain Your Sump Pump
Your sump pump is your first line of defense. Test it before winter ends by pouring water into the pit — the pump should activate and discharge the water. If it is more than seven to ten years old, consider replacing it proactively. Clean Gutters and Extend Downspouts
